NEWS ITEM

News item is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy.

 

GENERIC STRUCTURE OF NEWS ITEM

1. Main event recounts the event in summary

2. Elaboration (background, participant, time, place) elaborates what happened, to whom, and in what circumstances

3. Resource of information comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the event

Newsworthy events Moscow

Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear catastrophe, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.

Background Events

Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of Shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.

The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster, spread radioactive fall-out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of the Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those involved in the clean up operation to remove more than 600 tons of contaminated material were sworn to secrecy.

PERSONAL LETTER

A personal letter or friendly letter is a letter that is usually addressed to people you know personally

 

GENERIC STRUCTURE

 

HEADING

It is written in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

The heading contains:

a.      The address of the sender or the person writing the letter.

It can be omitted when the addressee knows the sender well and the sender’s address.

b.      The date when the sender writes the letter.

SALUTATION/GREETING

You can begin with the word:

Then, followed by first name of receiver and ended with comma.

BODY OF LETTER / MESSAGE

 

1) You state your message in the body.

2) You can begin with telling your experience and tell your aim / reason of writing the letter in the first paragraph.

3) Your second paragraph is your message.

4) Then, you can end the letter with clear ending stating what you expect and your feeling.

Example :

It was great hearing from you. I hope you are doing well. I felt surprise when I received a present from you. I felt excited as well. Anyway, I just wanted to thank for the present you gave me for my birthday. The book is really good, and it influences me a lot. The story inspires me to do better in my life. I will show this book to my friends. I really missed our togetherness when we were in high school. We spent the time together doing our favourite activities: swimming, cycling and running. I hope I can visit you in the next holiday. I can’t wait to meet you.

 

COMPLIMENTARY SIGN / CLOSING

Your closing can be written as follows:
