On our first evening,
we sat around the fire for supper listening to the stories which our uncle
had to tell of his many adventures in distance countries. I was so tired
after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I
could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting tales.
He was just in the middle of
describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when his small
sailing boat was carried out to sea in a storm, there was a loud crash from
the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.
“It sounds as if the roof has
fallen in!” exclaimed my uncle, with a loud laugh.
When we got to the top of the
stairs and opened the bedroom door we could see nothing at first because of
the thick clouds of dust which filled the room. When the dust began to clear,
a strange sight met our eyes. A large part of the ceiling had collapsed,
falling right onto the pillow of my bed. I was glad that I had stayed up late
to listen to my uncle’s stories; otherwise I should certainly have been seriously
injured, perhaps killed.

The
nuclear industry is threatened by controversy and misfortune. Partially
constructed plants have been closed for several reason. Construction costs
have escalated, the demand for power has decreased, and the number of
opponents to nuclear plants has increased tremendously. Nuclear energy, once
expected to have a future with cheap, plentiful power is currently reaching a
deadlock.
The major cause of the deterioration
in the nuclear industry is the complete failure at Three Miles Island. It is
common that machines break down and that people make errors, but when this
happens at a nuclear plant, it can cause widespread disaster.. it will take
twenty years and more than a billion dollars (more than the cost to construct
the plant) to clean up the nuclear
plant at Three Miles Island. The most significant factor about the accident
is, however, that it has destroyed the whole future of nuclear energy. Public
opposition to nuclear plants, which exited but where still weak when the
first nuclear plants were constructed, has become firm after the disastrous
accident at There Miles Island.
Nevertheless,
the nuclear plants that were built twenty and thirty years ago continue to
operate safely and economically. Smaller
than more recently built plants, they have produced power that
is consistently less expensive than power
from coal or oil. Newer plants were larger, less safe, and managed and
run by less qualified personnel. Many of these plants were designed and
constructed so negligently that they
are closed down.

Many thousands of
children have accidents in their homes.
As a result some children die.
The most common
accidents are with fire and hot water. Small children often touch pots of
boiling water on the stove. The pots fall over and the hot water falls on the
children and burns them. Some children like to play with fire. They enjoy
striking matches or throwing things on fire to make it burn brightly. If a
fire gets too big, it gets out of control. Then the house catches fire. It is
very dangerous to play with matches. When a child strikes a match, the flame
soon burns near his fingers. Then he drops the match on the floor. Many
houses catch fire in this way.
Some kinds of clothing burn very

The
rattlesnake has a reputation as a dangerous and deadly snake with a fierce
hatred for humanity. Although the rattlesnake is indeed a venomous snake
capable of killing a human, its nature has perhaps been somewhat exaggerated
in myth and folklore.
The
rattlesnake is not inherently aggressive and generally strikes only when it
has been put on the defensive. In its defensive posture the rattlesnake
raises the front part of its body off the ground and assumes an S-shaped form
in preparation for a lunge forward. At the end of a forward thrust, the
rattlesnake pushes its fangs into the victim, thereby injecting its venom.
There
are more than 30 species of rattlesnakes, varying in length from 20 inches to
6 feet and also varying in toxicity of venom. In the United States there are
only a few deaths annually from rattlesnakes, with a mortality rate less than
2 percent of those attacks.

What
is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a food-making process that occurs in
green plants. It is the chief function of leaves. The word photosynthesis
means putting together with light. Green plants use energy from light to
combine carbon dioxide and water to make sugar and other chemical compounds. How is the light used in photosynthesis? The light used in photosynthesis is absorbed by a green pigment called chlorophyll. Each food-making cell in a plant leaf contains chlorophyll in small bodies called chloroplasts. In chloroplast, light energy causes water drawn form the soil to split into hydrogen and oxygen. What are the steps of photosynthesis process? Let me tell you the process of photosynthesis, in a series of complicated steps, the hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide from the air, forming a simple sugar. Oxygen from the water molecules is given off in the process. From sugar together with nitrogen, sulphur, and phosporus from the soil-green plants can make starch, fat, protein, vitamins, and other complex compounds essential for life. Photosynthesis provides the chemical energy that is needed to produced these compounds. |
